Can Reformer Pilates Help Back Pain? A Guide from Our Richmond Studio
Back pain affects millions of people in the UK and is one of the most common reasons people begin looking for a different way to exercise. At The Pilates Sphere in Richmond, many of our clients tell us they are looking to build strength, improve mobility and move with greater confidence after episodes of back pain.
One of the first questions we're asked is:
"Can Reformer Pilates actually help?"
The answer is that, for many people with non-specific low back pain, exercise is recommended as part of a broader management plan, and Pilates is one option that may help improve pain and function.
What does the research say?
The UK's National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends exercise as part of managing persistent non-specific low back pain. They do not recommend one single type of exercise over another, but Pilates is included among the options that may be suitable for some people.
Research has shown that Pilates-based exercise can improve pain and function in people with chronic low back pain, particularly when performed consistently under the guidance of appropriately trained instructors. Results vary between individuals, and Pilates should be viewed as one part of an overall approach rather than a cure.
Why the Reformer?
The Reformer provides support while allowing you to strengthen muscles throughout the body.
Many people find that the adjustable springs allow them to work within a comfortable range of movement while gradually building strength, coordination and confidence.
Sessions often focus on:
developing core strength
improving hip and spinal mobility
strengthening the glutes and legs
improving posture and body awareness
building confidence in movement
Every person is different, so exercises should always be adapted where needed.
What do we see at The Pilates Sphere?
While everyone's experience is different, we regularly hear from clients who tell us that they feel stronger, move more confidently and notice improvements in their day-to-day back pain after attending classes consistently. Many also describe feeling less stiff, more mobile and more confident in their bodies.
Of course, Reformer Pilates isn't a treatment for back pain, and we can't guarantee individual outcomes. The causes of back pain vary considerably, which is why we always encourage anyone with persistent or severe symptoms to seek appropriate medical advice before starting a new exercise programme.
Starting safely
If you're experiencing ongoing back pain, it's important to seek advice from your GP or physiotherapist before beginning any new exercise programme.
At The Pilates Sphere, our Beginner classes are designed to introduce movements gradually while helping you develop good technique from the start.
